THE CRUX OF IT: How exactly do we decide who should be targeted, profiled or banned?
In this unsettling period we’re in, calls ring out to ensure “our” safety from… (insert given threat here)…by building walls or by sealing boarders to this group or that group. Over one billion people are intended to be systematically refused entry into this country by suggestion of the right-wing pundits, candidates, and their supporters.
The southern boarder of the U.S. is also meant to be somehow made impenetrable. But the Northern border is not problematic in any way.
These propositions would effectively turn this country into a quarantine zone built of xenophobia.
OK…if we did those things to protect ourselves and our helpless and precious children, shouldn’t we take steps to further ensure our safety and protect ourselves against the other horrific dangers that are persisting without any acts of legislation against them?
Allow me to illustrate-
We must expel Catholic priests; they are the number one perpetrators of pedophilia in American churches.
We must also take steps against Caucasian business men and women on Wall Street since, primarily, their stealing and abuses affect the welfare of the entire Country.
Next, a watch list must be established to track young Caucasian boys that are most likely to commit school or public mass shootings according to the history of the past twenty years.
We should call for the profiling and subsequent removal of all Caucasian female teachers under the age of forty so our young boys can escape the statutory raping that occurs under their care.
Lastly, all members of the Mormon faith must be gathered and expelled due to their practices of polygamy, incest, and child endangerment.
Don’t you agree with these statements?
Now that you are most likely offended…(I hope)…do you really think that I believe any of those proposals or would support any facsimile of their implementation?
I DO NOT AND WOULD NOT!
Those statements would sound unreasonable, unrealistic and somewhat bigoted to most.
The SAME degree of revulsion and ridicule should be applied to the reactionary suggestions from the right- but is not.
What’s the difference?
Who are the targets?
Why do these other factual and harmful realities escape penetrating criticism and blanket actions?
Why would I, most likely, almost unanimously be called divisive and misguided for even implying the hypothetical?
