Bionic Yarn is a company based out of New York that is helping to redesigning the future.
The company, whose creative director is Pharrell Williams, is using old plastic bottles that were litter collected at least in part from our ocean shores, to make yarns and fabrics. Those are then used to clothes like the jacket below or jeans.
The re purposed plastics are also used to make boat covers, furniture and other things as well.
Because the plastic bottles are made of the same polymer as polyester, they can be broken down and used in place of virgin polyester or new polyester made from crude oil.
The plastic fibers are combined with cotton, wool, or cashmere and utilized to make new items.
As this blog has reported before, over 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year equaling roughly one garbage truck worth of plastic dumped every second.
New methods and new uses for wasteful materials can, have been, and should continue to be innovated.
