THE CRUX OF IT: The point was missed, monumentally, yet again.
Rep. Robert Pittenger (R.- N.C.) had some very polarizing things to say recently after protests erupted in North Carolina.
At first listen, the remarks seem overtly bigoted – and to some degree they are.
But, even IF given the benefit of the doubt, the gross generalizations made are still insulting.
First of all, Black people don’t hate White people Per SE…
Black people HATE injustice, inequality, and brutality!
Black people HATE oppression!
Now, given those truths, the fact that the origin of those hated things seem to almost uniformly come from one source simply makes it appear to this man that Black people hate Whites.
Next, why does he generalize an entire group (whites) as successful and another as unsuccessful? Furthermore, how is success measured – to his mind?
The statement that America is a country of freedom and liberty strikes a particularly sour note on his part considering the basis for the set of remarks; protests against inequality!
Pittenger, this country was built, LITERALLY, on genocide, enslavement, lawful marginalization and internment.
It was not built on the industrious tenacity inherent in all Whites that allows them to prosper and become successful.
This country exercised those stated atrocities, then profited from them, and then blamed the hobbled victims for being what they were forged into.
A subsequent apology followed the witless statements as they usually do.
Now, we could all extend the benefit of the doubt to this person…
But, it is much more likely that a professional that speaks and communicates for a living stated exactly what was on his mind.
Whether it was offered in ill-considered ignorance or in revealing honesty, the mindset of this man is dubious at best.
