What is an introvert?

The textbook definition is as follows:

introvert [( in -truh-vurt)]
A term introduced by the psychologist Carl Jung to describe a person whose motives and actions are directed inward. Introverts tend to be preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings and minimize their contact with other people.

The term is somewhat fascinating because it is elusive to most. I have personally, only recently begun to embrace the word as a self-definition.

In a nutshell, an introvert MUST retreat to solitude after a time due to a kind of psychic parasitic draining of energy that occurs when one is around most people.

The tedious weight of others draining, forces introverts to “refill” themselves with themselves after a time.

The introverted person is often wrongly characterized as being shy, arrogant, unintelligent, or socially inept when the truth is that the noise surrounding them demands a counter; namely solitude. Their need to escape from the insignificant shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness.

My newly formed personal theory is that introverts become drained because they are in fact the source of energy for the larger world around them.

The greater the draw/demand from the outside- the greater the need to refuel internally.

An introvert that becomes comfortable shares their energy freely and becomes one of the funniest and most engaging people that anyone could meet.

Here are a few profound quotes about introverts:

“Quiet people have the loudest minds.” Stephen Hawking

“Don’t underestimate me because I’m quiet. I know more than I say, think more than I speak and observe more than you know.” ~ Michaela Chung

“Introverts crave meaning so party chitchat feels like sandpaper to our psyche.” ~ Diane Cameron

“Originality thrives in seclusion free of outside influences beating upon us to cripple the creative mind. Be alone—that is the secret of invention: be alone, that is when ideas are born.”~ Nikola Tesla

“The more powerful and original a mind, the more it will incline towards the religion of solitude.” ~ Aldous Huxley

Extroversion is a trait that gets the better publicity in our culture but imagine a world of exclusively extroverts…what a petty and noisy place.
